Let’s Talk Pumpkin Spice

The appearance of colorful fall leaves marks pumpkin spice’s annual emergence. Pumpkin spice is a scent and flavor mixture made of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice. Combined with coffee, the drink is pleasantly sweet and warm from its spices. Some may say it’s like taking a sip of hot coffee in front of a fireplace. However, I personally despise the taste of pumpkin spice, and I may have my slight opinions against you if you enjoy it, but we’re not here to talk about that.

Let’s say I do accept you for genuinely enjoying pumpkin spice lattes, there’s still a point where this gets too out of hand. From candles and air fresheners to vodka and spam (no thank you!), the pumpkin spice craze continues to expand each year. It’s almost like as soon as the first leaf hits the ground, companies can start forcing pumpkin spice into any product and consumers will accept it. I’m convinced that most people just say they like it because it’s a trend. Overrated, that is. Pumpkin spice roams all over Instagram and Pinterest. But seriously, don’t you think it’s getting old?

A quick trip to Amazon was mind-boggling. All sorts of pumpkin spice t-shirts. The most popular one seems to be “Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice.” More like pumpkin spice and nothing nice. Who would really want that printed on their shirt? The very first one says, “At this point… My Blood Type is Pumpkin Spice.” Apparently, people want to turn into pumpkin spice aliens now! I am concerned for the well-being of those who would consider buying a graphic tee with one of those slogans plastered on the front.

Maybe I should just say pumpkins, in general, are overrated. Pumpkins are probably most known for getting carved during the Halloween season. But even that isn’t fun. You know, that process when you scrunch your eyes together, reach inside, and pull out the slimy insides… I’m holding back disgust as I write this.

This season, I’m begging you, please don’t post an “aesthetic” picture of you holding a pumpkin spice latte.
