Over the Summer two very important political conventions took place: The Democratic and Republican National Conventions. During these Conventions the two political parties chose and endorsed a candidate to stand behind in the upcoming Presidential Election. During the conventions, Mr. Biden and President Trump both had their hand at appealing to Bernie Sanders supporters, in specific. In the current presidential race, Sanders’s supporters have gone both ways in a split. So, if the supporters can be won over it would help the candidate greatly with a potential win in the upcoming Presidential Election.
The 2020 Republican National Convention was held from August 24th to August 27th in Charlotte, North Carolina. President Trump was nominated with his running mate: Vice President Mike Pence. The convention had speakers such as: Current Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen Pence, White house councilor Kellyanne Conway, Donald Trump Jr, Ivanka Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and, Current United Nations Representative for the United States: Nikki Haley. One aspect of this particular convention was that President Trump and his family all gave their speeches on the White House lawn with over 1,500 guests. This caused backlash especially in the media due to the lack of Covid-19 related precautions taken with guests not wearing masks at their seats.
The 2020 Democratic National Convention was held from August 17th to August 20th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris were the presidential nominees. The convention had a remarkable seventeen speakers such as: Jill Biden, Former President: Bill Clinton, Senator Bernie Sanders, John Kasich former governor of Ohio, and, house speaker Nancy Pelosi. Now, you must have saw the name John Kasich and wondered to yourself what a republican was doing speaking at the Democratic National Convention. Well, to be put simply it’s a strategy. Similar to the reasoning for having Senator Sanders as a speaker in order to garner the leftist youth vote, Senator Kasich spoke to the percentage of Republican voters who may be leaning towards Trump, urging that they support Biden instead. It seems that many reporters are referring to Former Vice President Biden’s acceptance speech as a ‘story speech’ unlike President Trump’s very policy related speech.
The Next step in the Presidential Election Process is the General Election which will take place in November.
